What is Ramsey Heights Community Trust

In relatively recent times Ramsey Heights was a somewhat different community with a shop, several public houses, a school, a chapel and a village hall.  Most of the inhabitants were born and brought up in the village.  This along with the above mentioned amenities gave the village several focal points, which allowed the village to be a community.

For a whole variety of reasons the village has changed with the main cause being the way that people now live.  Like everywhere else, people have the ability to travel much greater distances for almost everything which has led to the decline of local facilities, the need for children born in the village to seek their livelihood elsewhere and the influx of people from further afield.

The village hall used to be sited in Middle Drove but fell into disrepair and was demolished.  Later the plot of land was available for the use of the village, but due to the costs of third party liability insurance was sold as a building plot in 1996.  These funds have been kept safe by the trustees of Ramsey Heights Community Trust (a registered charity) and accumulated interest.

In September 1999, a General Meeting was called in the village to discuss what should be done with the fund.  That meeting showed that there was a real feeling that the village needed some amenities and there was a will to do that - but that no-one really knew what was needed.  So a questionnaire was distributed to all 173 households to determine the views of the villagers.

Following that, the Trust then purchased a 5 acre field off Pickards Drove, to use as a Community field. This land is managed and maintained by the Trust volunteers.  The grass cutting is undertaken by Ramsey Town Council. Additional funding and grants were obtained, including from Living Spaces to develop this Green Space into an area with pathways, shrubs and a small play area for children.  Village signs have also been purchased and erected and the latest purchase has been of the swings for the play area.

Ramsey Town Council has offered us a village notice board, which will be erected during 2007.

The remit of Ramsey Heights Community trust is, in the interests of social welfare, and without distinction of political, religious or other opinions, to provide, maintain and improve the local community social and recreational amenities.

One function is to arrange village and social events which allow us not only to fundraise, but also have a good time in the process and put on events that give all residents the opportunity to meet each other and socialise.

Another role of the Trust is to be aware of local environmental issues such as traffic calming, state of roads and pavements, farming and residential issues that could impact the Ramsey Heights community.

The village is continually changing and we appreciate any help and assistance that residents and others feel they are able to offer the trust. We have a limited number of volunteers and any assistance or help will be gratefully received.
